Re: 1975 15ft GALAXIE 85hp worth $1500

What66. The hull and interior look in descent shape from the photos, but that motor would worry me. Does it run? What is wrong with the L/U? Do a compression and spark check first. The L/U will have new oil in it after the dealer finishes working on it so you won't be able to check it for water or filings. I would for sure want to water test this boat before I dropped $1500. Could be a mechanical nightmare. The trailer needs work too. If he gets the L/U fixed and the motor runs good I'd offer $1000 to $1200. If the motor has problems i.e. bad compression, no spark, shifting problems, doesn't run, etc... I would run the other way unless you want a fixer upper and you're a good wrench. Hope this helps, good luck.

Ask to water test the boat. That will tell the tale, and at the least do the checks noted above. I would ask to deal directly with the owner. If he won't give you his name then he's getting a cut of the price. Seems a little steep, but not a bad deal if motor is in good shape.

Hull looks good, I agree you must have a water test. I would also carefully check the floor and transom for rot in the woood, looks like the carpet has been replaced, make sure there is not a quick n dirty repair job under that carpet!

thanks for the info I took a good look at it the carpet looks good and the floor is solid no signs of rot.
I don't think a water test is posible he syas he's not making much money from this deal becuse of the lower unit repairs he's making.
I don't think he's trying to con me or anything.
Ive been to other deallers and they tried to get me to buy a boat thats 10 times what I can aford.
I have decide to get thisa one so thanks for your help. :)

I can't seem to bring the picture up of the boat you are looking at, but I cannot stress enough the importance of a water test. People will tell you anything to sell their boats, and if he is going to the trouble to fix the lower unit, then he can spare 1/2 hour to let you test the boat on the water. Motors can start fine on land, but when put under load can do all sorts of things.
Something else to consider is age of motor. I do believe 1975 Evinrudes had power packs in them. If they quit, boat won't run and they are getting harder to find at a reasonable price. Are controls selectric shift? If so, stay away.
