Comment/Question:<br />I have the Evinrude/Johnson outboard shop manual 2-40 HP- 1973-1990. Working<br />on my 1973-4, 4HP Johnson,I found there is no exploded view of the fuel<br />pump,as mine is in peices i have no idea where the 2 springs fit in between<br />the gaskets.Any help or diagrams would be greatly appreciated.<br /> Bryan Littlechild

this is not entirely true. I have the same outboard and if you take the pump off and take it to a dealer, it is a common replacement kit. I just did this this morning and was on the river by noon. you only use the big spring you should see the indention of it on the diaphram. kit "Sierra" part# 18-7823 replaces OMC 393088 worked great for me.

Hi, similar problem. I took my fuel pump apart, to drain for storage in the tropics. The big spring popped out, and I was not sure where it went back. Seemed to reassemble ok, and it will run at high speed, but as I slow down it dies, and when I squeeze fuel bulb, some fuel squirts out of second gasket in, where there is a little built in groove in the side of the plastic part. Is this normal? Any suggestions as to the problem? The lower part of the asbestos type gasket on the engine shredded, below the lower bolt holding the fuel pump to the engine block. Is that a problem?
