I just removed the water jacket and bubble exhaust manifold from my motor. One of the diverters on my block was melted thru allowing that cylinder to vent straight out the exhaust. Should I replace this part? I heard someone here say that they could be left out. It seems to me that would reduce the benefit of the bubble exhaust.

Yes on the V4 they can be left out with no problem. Most times they run better. The thing to do now is find out why you have so much heat in the exhaust.

Some possible causes could be too low WOT RPM, wrong spark plugs, or too high octane among other things.

While you have the bubble off go ahead and replace the thermoststs. It's a lot easier to do it now. Also pull the heads and replace the rubber deflectors in the water jackets. If you havent done a complete water pump replacement in a while it would be a good idea now. That pretty much takes care of the cooling system.

Good luck!

I actually have the powerhead off to re-ring the motor. I just wanted to know if I should replace these with ones from another motor I have for parts. I will be ordering a gasket and seal kit for the motor but was wondering what to use for the crankcase? I believe I used Permatex ultra-copper before, is this correct? Also should I use sealer or locktite on any bolt threads? One more question, what should I use to remove the carbon build up on the pistons? I had them cooked with the block but it only removed the oils.

Permatex ultra copper is correct. I would not go overbaord with the loctite but it is a good security (piece of mind) measure.

As for cleaning the pistons, well, if you have them out you can use a 3m pad and scrub the heck out of them.

Bob

Don't worry about what the pistons look like. Measure the cylinders (with a dial bore gauge) and I'll bet you will find they are out of round enough that they need to be bored. The crankcase and front half should be sealed with Gel Seal.

Good luck!
