I needed a motor to put on my brand new 20 foot Crestliner. My 10 year old 50hp Johnson is starting to act up so I decided I'd trade it in for something new before something goes really wrong with it.

My choices were narrowed down to:

60hp Yamaha 2-stroke ($4400 after trade in)
50hp Honda 4-stroke ($5200 after trade in)

what would you do? I'll post my decision later tonight.

Go with the Honda 4-stroke, have you looked at Yamaha 4-strokes ? For the extra money, the 4-strokes are the way to go. I'm on my 2nd one now.

Hi, Aaron.

I agree with Leaner. Go 4 stroke.

But I recommend an EFI four stroke, which the Honda is not.

Either the Johnson/Suzuki 50 or the Mercury 60 are fuel injected. They will cost a bit more, but EFI does for 4 stroke outboards what it does for cars. Computer control makes them so much better behaved.

Complicated? Yes, but not as complicated as three or four carbs.

Once you have used a 4 stroke you will never go back.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: Had to make a new motor decision! What would YOU have done?

a guy I know is a really good mechanic and works on outboards, and he told me that the the american motors are good, however the japanese motors really do have them beat and are quite a bit better?

Can anyone elaborate on this or tell me what you think?

ALSO, I chose the 60hp Yamaha. I didn't mean to imply that I was still trying to decide, I just wanted to know what you guys think. It's more powerful, however the ultimate factor was the $800 lower cost. I don't mind mixing oil in with the gas, been doin it my whole life. Also, fuel efficiency isn't that important to me. I don't mind putting 8 bucks worth of gas in when I need to.

Why did you ask for advice if you didn't care about convenience (oil mixing) or about gas economy (carb vs. EFI)?

Having worked with carburetors for 42 years, I think you made a mistake to not go with EFI, given that you had a choice...

well, I thought the best parts of the 4-strokes were the noise and the reliability.

My choice was simular to yours, Yamaha or Honda.
I definately wanted a 4stroke for the clean running smoothness and less noise. I asked several people in the business. I asked dealers that offered both. Always, without exception the answer was, "they are both so close and equal and it was a Chev/Ford kind of thing". However, if you listen REAL close to the experts, the edge was given to Honda for a touch more refinement/smoothness. Also, additional important differences were revealed. The Yamaha has a deminishing warranty over 2 years. The Honda has a top to prop warranty over 3 years. The carberated models have a 4 year emmisions warranty that cover the carbs and related components. I'm also powering a jetdrive and the carbs are better suited for the task. The Honda BF50 is 53 pounds lighter then the Yamaha F50.
The choice was real easy and I paid a little extra for the Honda.

Re: Had to make a new motor decision! What would YOU have done?

If it had been me, I would have contacted mrmerc in Havelock Ontario,Canada and purchased a new 2002 Mercury 4 stroke.
He sells the 50 hp EFI for Can$7050 approx US$4400 and the 60 hp EFI for Can$7750 approx US$4850.
The warranty is three years and I think the price includes prop and installation, so you may be able negotiate a little. I believe there is no duty or sales tax applicable and shipping can't be that much!

With the money saved you could have a vacation in Canada, have mrmerc install the motor and then do some great Walleye fishing in the area.

Sounds to me that you guy's south of the boarder a paying way too much for your motors

Howdy Aaron.

Making a decision first and then asking for advice is sometimes done by folks with buyer's remorse, seeking some support.

You are not going to get it from me.

You bought a decent engine that will give you good service, but not the best decision by a long shot.

If you really value the advice of experienced people, ask for it first, then decide.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

You see what you guys went and did.....LOL He didn't last too long, registered yesterday, posted 4 times and is outta here! Oh well, I guess he couldn't handle it. You would think a professional fishing guide would know better. What an a-hole! Now he's got posting remorse.

Seems to me that 50 or 60 H.P. on a 20 foot Crestliner is grossly under powered.
Personally I wouldnt go with less than a 150
on that boat. But to each his own.
