I have an electrical problem on a 28hp johnson(1991)that prevents it from starting. The starter motor will not run when key is turned. When i turn the key i get an audible click in the solonoid. At first i thought the starter might be bad so i hooked up a portable battery pack directly to the starter and it fired up fine with no hesitation. Then i thought it has to be the solonoid, so i replaced that and still have the same problem. Can the problem have something to do with the starter switch or nuetral safety switch? I dont know much about the wiring in the switches and not sure how to check to see if this is cause of the problem.
thanks
james

Hey jamesj, Check your Battery connections, make sure they are clean and not corroded. Also check the Battery.

Hey, James.

I agree with Shooter. You have a low resistance "open" in one of your connections in the high current circuit.

Battery connections, connections to the solenoid and the block from the battery. It also could be a badly corroded terminal on the wires themselves.

Take them off, clean them well and reinstall.

Let us know what you find. :)

jamesj,

Ditto the others. You can eliminate your key switch and nuetral safety switch because you are getting power to the solonoid. Problems with either one of those would stop that.

Poor connections or a weak battery are the likely culprits.
