I have an evinrude 135 hp outboard "The Big Mean Green Machine" I need to replace impeller on it. Where can I disconnect the shift linkage so I can remove lower half of engine? Drained oil but can't find where or if cables or shift linkage needs to be removed first. No cover plate seen on motor just two oil screws and four bolts holding lower half on. Any help would be great! HAPPY BOATING FRIENDS!!!!!
This is an Evinrude 135hp motor MODEL:135683G SERIAL:C68672 its on a 1976 Wescraft Runabout MODEL:18XL any info. on motor or boat will be helpful ;)

Putting my 85 120 back together tonight. Mine has a screw for the shift rod right underneath the carbs. And there's 2 more screws on mine under that adjustable fin under the motor. Scribe a line on this before removing it. Get under there and find all screws. I missed one the first time around and after some prying....Oops

Luna Sea Thank you. I'll get under the motor and check it out. Hopefully I'll be boating this weekend with my ten year old daughter. Thanks again.

There is only one bolt on the underside of the motor that is recessed in and one that is on a round dail that I beleive helps with the steering.
It has numbers and tick marks! The lower unit only had four bolts facing up into the upper half , the two above mebtioned bolts and the two oil screws. This is a Evinrude 135hp outboard model #135683G serial #C68672 its on a 1976 wescraft runabout. Any help would be great!!

Luna Sea I don't see any steering plate! Is it under the top cover?
I don't see any plates outside of the motor top or bottom half. Just the stuff I listed above in last reply.... This is one mystery I hope to solve soon the lake is calling me!!!!!!!!!!!! :(

To get the bottom end off.

The shift bolt is buried under the bottom carb. To see it remove the carbs. You can undo it with a long screwdriver or a 1/4 socket can get in there as well (without removing the carbs). Good luck getting it together again with the carbs in place.

Pays to put it in reverse when you remove it as well.

According the the manual you are supposed to drain the oil and remove the prop. Will save your kuncles if you remove the prop.

4 bolts that you can see.

1 bolt under the trim tab.
1 just behind it. Be carefull removing the big bolt under the cavitation plate as the exhaust passes though the area where this bolt ends and it is likely to be corroded in there.

I have a copy of the clymer manual. It's ok butit tends to be very general.

The relevant section for dropping the bottom end is about 1 page. (Can be scanned and e-mailed)

Soak all the bolts in penetrating oil. (wd 40 works but not as well as some others stuck screw has a few sugestions on this)

Heat them to break any lock tight. And hope that they are not to corroded. If they don't turn reasonably easily after being heated take the unit to a shop as you may have a corrosion problem.
