I'm just finishing restoration of a 1957 Trojan that originally had Two Evinrude 35HP short shaft motors. I have the motors and am playing with the idea of restoring them, but want to use a single newer motor. I've been told that I'll have a hard time finding a short shart motor larger than 40HP. Would a 20" shaft motor fit the bill? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sk, a short shaft is 15" and long shaft is 20". I'm not qiute sure how big of a boat you are talking about, but dropping 30hp off the transom will make a big difference. I would restore the 35's if you want to keep her original. Parts are easy to find and there's a big swap meet in Niagara Falls this Sat. http://www.aomci.org/events/ Believe it or not you are living in the old engine parts capital of the US. With all those fresh water lakes the area is lousey with old engines. If you want to go single I'd be looking for a 60-63 75hp Evinrude or Johnson. If you like Mercs, 57-58's where their first years for the 6 cylinder engines. They had no reverse or neutral, but when you shifted them the engine would shut down and restart in the opposite direction giving you reverse. They were called "Dockbusters" for obvious reasons, but would be a classic on the boat you have.

Check out the site I posted, look at the Webvertise classifieds. Dunk
