My Johnson/Evinrude 85HP needs a year.
The number on the engine is faided - it ends with ESL69E and B***853. What year is it-69?
Further, it starts nicely, but the electric gearing is difficult. On land it is ok. In the water it is difficult to change gear. It is excedingly difficult to change to forward gear. Does anybody have a cure? Is it possible to mount a manual gear? Thanks a lot, Robert

Re: Motor ID and electric gear problems

your engine is a 85ESL69

have a look on: http://www.evinrude.com/docktalk/modref/jomodyr/JHP85.html
for that model.

yes its a 69 model.

Don't know why forward should be a problem, its the default in these things.

See the posts on Hydro electric on this list in the last week, I just went though something similiar to what you are describing. (I have a 100ESL72 which is a 72 model 100HP, (the ESL I think designates the shifter and ignition type.)

You probably could install a manual changer, but it would cost heaps and take ages and not be worth it..

I dropped my leg off, flushed out out with 2 stroke mix after taking out the soleniods, replaced the wiring for them, and put it all back together.. worked for me..

read the threads on the subject. (some are by me, and one by Raleigh Wood. They explain stuff better then I can here.

rgds

Frank

Thank you Frank - I made a mistake when I mentioned forward gear. I actually meant reverse. Thanks also for the link.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT IS DIFFICULT TO GO IN GEAR ,IT DOES NOT GO INTO REVERSE OR THE HANDLE IS HARD TO MOVE TO FORWARD GEAR, OR IS YOURS A PUSH BUTON SHIFT?

Re: Motor ID and electric gear problems

We have had to make a make-shift handle because the contact for the gears was worn. It never went properly into gear then. Contact is now made to the electric gears through a seperate switch. The gears are no better now than before. The reverse gear seems to be affected whilst in the water. On dry land with a hose into the lower part of the gears, all appears well. There is a wire from the engine going down to the gears. Is it possible that the mechanic did not solder the wires after he serviced it.Perhaps that is irrelevant. I heard somewhere in the distant past that earthing the engine/gears was important. Its a shame that the reverse gear is so erratic because the engine is sound, and with good compression. What do you suggest?
Robert
