I am going to try to rebuild a 1990 Johnson 40HP. Any suggestions on which manual to buy and where to find it would be appreciated. I have never worked on marine engines. I have no compression on one cylinder. A good step by step manual would be a life saver.
Thanks.

Hi sandman
Do you know what caused your compersion loss on that hole? Did it over heat or run out of oil etc? Did you already try to decarb that cylender? Don't be in too big a hurry to over haul until you've played all your cards. Of corse OEM manuals are best, but most folks can get by with an after market just fine. I use both. I keep my good stuff in my office and use the others in the shop. I am a hobbiest I work at home.

THE BEST MANUALS ARE THE FACTORY MANUALS THEY GIVE GOOD DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS.EASIEST PLACE TO GET IT WOULD BE YOUR LOCAL DEALER.

Unfortunately I have no idea what happened to the motor. I loaned it out to some friends and returned from vacation only to find a motor that would not throtle up. I did a compression check and found 0 compression in one of the two cylinders. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Is there a particular name to look for on the OMC manuals? I thought I may try e-bay or somewhere I may pick up a "used" manual.
Thanks

You can order manuals online or buy them at a marine store, order from a dealer or check one out at the libaray. If this was my motor I would try a decarbizing soak on that cylender as it might just be stuck rings.

Yo sandman,
If your dealer can't fix you up with a manual, go to Ken Cook Marine Publications. They gotta a web site and OMC factory manuals.

c/6

Hooty

Hey Alcan, do you spray the decarbarizer into the cylinder through the spark plug or how would you do that. How long would you let it sit and then what? I appreicate the suggestion.
Thanks Hooty, I will look at it.

If you do have 0 compression on one cylinder I doubt that decarb will help you.But hey why not give it a shot.If you get poor results, just pull the cylinder head and let us know what you see.The one thing that OMC has done consistantly over the years is they make the best ,most easy to use,and well diagramed and photographed manuals that I have ever used.Price will be comparable to a general repair manual that covers a broad range of product.Order an OEM manual if you decide on the rebuild yourself and consult us when you get to special tools issues. We may know an end around.

I agree with hondon. I have only used the stuff that comes in a bottle. All the major out board companies sell this stuff under their own name. Yamaha calls theirs (ring free)merc and omc call theirs somthing elese. I have used them all at one time or another. Just tilt your motor up as far as you can. Rotate the engine so as to bring the piston fairly close to top of stroke. With the plugs out of corse. Pour in a little of that juice. Let it set at least over night. They have directions on the bottle. Play with it a few days. See what you come up with. The question is what caused the problem? If you get lucky and you get compression back, you don't want a reoccurance. Let us know how your doing.

Does $40.00 sound right for a repair manual with OMC?
