I'm looking for information on the different ways to protect my prop. I have a old 55hp evinrude and am going to use it on the cowlitz river. I see alot of things advertized out there but haven't talked to anyone who has used one.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

I have been told they work very well, but can slow the proformance of your boat, who cares were fishing right! I cant find it now but I had a catalog that advertized them starting around $120.00 on up. if I find it, and I have been looking, Ill give you more info.
This was out of a boat us catalog.

since this has been asked b4, you should use the "search forum" option at top of pg, and look in boating, and this forum, maybe even the others for all the links to different sources for prop guards. that way you can see what you might like best. good luck

:) Since i am somewhat of a McGiver type, this is what i did. Made a ushape bracket welded a old pitch fork hay type in the middle 5 prong. drilled holes and bolted it to the bottom of motor. This probables slows me down just a little but never have to replace prop or a pin. I will add that the old forks are better than the new ones they have more spring and will break not bend you do not want one that will bend cost less than ten dollars. I am on the new river with rocks rocks and more rocks.

I grew up on the New River, fishing around Glen Lyn and Narrows Va. Some very deep hole, but also some very large rocks.

I like your way to protect the prop better than my dad's way as I grew up as a kid.

His way was to have me sit on the front of his jon boat and tell him when the rocks were getting too close to the surface. All this while he was moving at 10 to 15 mph.

Amazingly, I never ended up going swimming.

Just be careful,

In rocky areas, aluminium props are great because they are cheaper then a gearcase..

If you put a big solid steel prop protector on, and you have a big hit, you may end up totaling the lower half of your outboard.

If you do make a solid one, give it a couple of "weaker" points so they break instead of tearing the outboard off your boat or the leg off your outboard.

( I have seen the results of that sort of thing a couple of times, and once to myself.) I got home with my Suzuki 40 tied to the back of my boat with ropes and the throttle stuck on fast idle with tape.

rgds

Frank
