Evinrude 150 runs better when choked

I have a 1980 Evinrude 150 and a lot of questions about it. It sat around for long periods of time between use before I got it and now that I have used it a few times it seems to have a fuel flow problem. When I am at idle it runs very smooth, but when I open it up to get up on plane it seems to throttle up and then choke from lack of fuel (I am guessing). The real kicker to this is when I push the choke in (fuel dumps into the cylinders), it seems to come alive. The choke also seems to bring me to the peak RPMs once on a plane. I have replaced the fuel ball, plugs, filter, checked the fuel lines and used the CRC marine carb cleaner, but no success at this point. I may rebuild the carbs, but I cannot seem to find anywhere on the net that sales the high speed jets. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

FROM WHAT YOU ARE SAYING I WOULD DEFINETLY BUILD THE CARBS .THERE SHOULD BE NO NEED TO REPLACE THE HIGH SPEED JETS THOUGH.AND I WOULD RECOMEND THAT YOU USE THE FACTORY CARB KITS AND YOU WILL BE BETTER OFF TO GET THEM FROM A LOCAL DEALER.

ALSO YOU SHOULD STOP RUNNING THE MOTOR UNTIL IT IS FIXED RIGHT. IF YOU KEEP RUNNING IT LIKE YOU ARE IT WILL FRY THE MOTOR FROM RUNNING TO LEAN.

Maybe you can go the cheaper way by buying a seloc book and reading the carburator adjustment chapter. It may also answer your other questions in a user friendly readable way.Good luck.
rolmops. :)

the cabs on your 150 are fixed jet carbs and there is no adjustment to them.other than the actual linkage on the side of them .if you do buy a book to work on this engine you should buy the factory manuals not one of the after market books which are not good for much of anything except starting a fire in your fire place.

"ALSO YOU SHOULD STOP RUNNING THE MOTOR UNTIL IT IS FIXED RIGHT. IF YOU KEEP RUNNING IT LIKE YOU ARE IT WILL FRY THE MOTOR FROM RUNNING TO LEAN". AMEN! I constanly see guys posting things like my motor wont make full power or it's running on 4or5 outta six well guys if it's starving for fuel than it surely must be also starving for oil to lubricate the cylinders in question, which brings me to the point of my post: When you buy a boat instead of running it as is why not take in to a professional who understands what happens to an outboard when it has partially or fully clogged jets or needle valves if it's starving for fuel it's also running dry as in no oil or lack of adequate lubrication

Thank you all for the information... Just as an FYI.. I only know of two dealers in this area... The first one does not seem very experienced in the field and the other is not very customer focused. I will have to purchase from one of them, but I like to know what I am looking for before I go looking for it. I have a seloc manual and unfortunately Capt Black is correct... It gives the basics, but it is very generic in most cases and lacks detail in some of the important areas. Thanks again for all the recommendations.

PS.. CaptBlacksmarine, The jets are threaded and do appear to be removable (not sure if they are the original carbs though). When the plugs are removed, I can see a slot that appears to be used for removal. If I don't need them, then I won't worry about it.

Life needs challenges-- working on your own motor can be one. Buy cheep and it's all good. ( just learn your lessons )
Onward through the Fog.

JCREECH,THE JETS ARE REMOVABLE BUT NOT ADJUSTABLE .YOU CAN REMOVE THEM FOR CLEANING OR REPLACEMENT,JUST BE SURE YOU HAVE A SCREW DRIVER THAT FITS THEM WELL SO YOU DON'T MESS UP THE ENDS OF THEM.BUT THERE IS NO NEED TO REPLACE THEM ABOUT THE ONLY THING THAT WOULD WARRANT REPLACING THEM IS IF THEY HAVE ALREADY BEEN TORN UP BY SOME ONE ELSE REMOVING THEM WITH THE WRONG SCREW DRIVER.THE STYLE JETS THAT ARE IN YOUR CARB ,WELL I CAN'T EVER RECALL OF ONE I HAVE SEEN OR HEARD OF THAT WORE OUT OR WENT BAD WITH OUT SOME TYPE OF HUMAN INTERFERENCE.HOPE YOU GET IT RUNNING GOOD THEY ARE VERY GOOD ENGINES.

Re: Evinrude 150 runs better when choked

Well I rebuilt all of the carb and the middle and bottom assemblies were clogged up. I ran it last weekend and it ran like a champ. The only issue I found was that it runs more RPMs and faster when the gas petal is backed off about 3/4 an inch from full. Any ideas? The carb assemblies have a stop on it that prevents the butterfly from opening past full. Thanks again for all of your input.
