I have a 3 HP Evinrude that has now been named the Evilrude! I can't keep it running! This engine has me stummped.

Problem:

1. It takes a ton of pulls to start.
2. When it does run (in the garbage can) it seems to run fine. When I put it on the back of my inflatable it in the ocean it stalls every time. Then it's very difficult to restart if I can even do that. I feel like the carb bowl runs dry.

Things that I have done:
1. Changed the plugs
2. Installed new pts and condensers
3. Cleaned out the entire carb
4. Checked the spark for + spark (O.K.)
5. Fresh premix
6. What is the proper pts. gap?
7. Do I set the gap at TDC on the compression stroke?

Please help! I'll take any advice on how to make this thing run like my old Merc 2.2. that would start with one pull and run all day. Stolen Dec 2001!!

Howdy, Jetspeed. Welcome to the board.

A common problem (well, there are no common problems on that engine)with the lil 'Rudes is gunked up fuel tank outlet filters and clogged tank vents. There may also be water in the tank.

Set the points at .020 when on the highest point of the cam. This will be near TDC for that cylinder.

Do a compression test and decarb the engine. You may simply have carboned up rings killing your compression.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

I don't know your motor but it may not have a fuel pump. If it does you should check that. Either way check all the fuel lines for good fuel flow. Also double check the carb float adjustment.

Rob

Jetspeed,

What year is your motor? Is this the type with the integral fuel tank?

What year is it? i have a light twin that had the same problems.make sure that the fule stone is not clogged if it has one. make sure the fuel line is not blocked. and by all means if it has the gas cap on the gas tank on top of the motor make sure those vent holes are not clogged. it took me a long time for someone to reply with that little bit of wisdom. if they are clogged up the motor will run and stop and run and stop.......... the float in my carb was a cork one and was falling apart so i took one out of a lawn mower ( briggs & stratten ) and bent the float grip to fit it . fixed that problem. for your pull starting problem if you can leave the gas tank on an get to the bolt on the top of the flywheel deal you can take a short socket extension ( 3/8 ) and grind it down to fit a semi large electric drill and get a socket to fit. that helped me big time when it was at home in the can and i was working on it. just don't get the cord wet. hope i helped.
P.S. 0.02 on the gap .
