Hi all,

I have just decarbed my motor, (Johnson 100HP 1972 100ESL72 V4)
I noticed that when I pump the bulb hard, fuel comes out of two holes between the two carb throats.. So I pulled the float chambers off and took a look. both were spotless, no gunk at all, both needles and seats were in good nick.. so I gave them a clean out anyway and put it all back together.. it did it again.. but the strange thing is that it only does it at the start, it seems to tapper off later on and the motor runs fine..

I can supply a schematic of the carbs if anyone thinks they can help..

normally I would assume that the floats were stuck but I know they aren't... and they all look brand new and seem fine..

I'd love to get some ideas here...

kindest regards

Frank

It sounds like your sqeezing the primer bulb floods the carbs and they are venting through the carbs. Maybe the needles aren't seating. It might not be a problem though.

Thats what I thought.. but like I said, the needle and seats are in good nick and should be working fine.. and yet they are not..

I even left the floats floating in a tub of fuel, neither of them sank... or got any fuel in them..

everything was also spotlessly clean as well..

Thats why this is so confusing..

It gets worse.. sometimes its the top carb doing it, and other times its the bottom carb that does it..

Its seems very strange that the same thing is wrong with both carbs,, so I am thinking its something else.. but I'm abit lost for suggestgions...

rgds

Frank

Hi again,,

I thought it might be wise to buy some of that stuff that you put in fuel to clean fuel lines out.. run some through the motor and just let it sit for a day or two,, then repeat... and so on..

I couldn't see any gunk or dirt.. but I really ownly looked in the float bowl,, I figured that if there wasn't dirt in there, it wouldn't likely be anywhere else either..

Any thoughts anyone?

ta..

Frank

when you pump up your primer bulb try just pumping it up firm and not super hard some older engines (espiecially mercs) don't like being primed up hard and **** fuel all over creation making you think theirs a major problem with the float valve assy.
if it starts and runs ok.
