Went to the keys last week and the boat ran great all week. Got home and the power trim didn't work. Nothing. Must be the switch or the solenoid.
Any tips that can save me some time before I start trouble shooting? '79 Johnson 150 Seahorse.

Just a note. The help I got from you guys last year kept me from repowering. Now the thing runs so good, I am going for another year!! I can't kill it!! :D

Re: Power Trim problems

Corrosion on the wires. I went through the same thing last year and it was a pain. I would suggest that you remove every connection one at a time, lightly sand off the leads then re-connect. The Johnson/Evinrude tilt trim are very touchy when it comes to corrosion. This will eliminate the least costly of the problem.

The Clymer manual has a good step by step process to checking the system and troubleshooting the T & T.

Bob

Re: Power Trim problems

If cleaning up the connections doesn't fix the problem here is the procedure I generally use. Have someone operate the trim switch while you listen to the solenoids. If they don't click then try jumping the trim switch, if they do click then try putting power directly to the trim motor. If the motor doesn't go then the motor is the problem, if it does then it probably is the relays.

Re: Power Trim problems

something you might try before going any farther...some trim systems have a reset switch...if too much load is put on them or if they take a sudden jolt or something, it will kick the switch. mine is located about 6 inches from the up and down solenoids. its a very small black box with a reset switch on the side....

Re: Power Trim problems

Problem solved...Thanks.
Started at the switch. No power. Installed new hot line with inline fuse. Solenoid started clicking. Traced down corrosion on the hot line to the solenoid from the battery. Resolved that, all works well. :)
