Re: 65 HP JOHNSON - WHAT YEAR???

Hi! New to this forum. Just bought a Johnson 65 HydroElectric Drive Model 75ELR76D Sr. #J4551300. Not sure what year it is. I am going to need a manual. Never had an outboard. Not sure where to post this.
Thanks. Leont

Thanks for your help. The 65 HP was on the cover, wondered why it said 75 HP on the plate. Thanks again, will order the manual.

Better be careful there. Somebody has swapped either the hood or the plate. The manuals are too costly to be buying the wrong one that might not be of use to you.

EDIT: Check the serial number on the round quarter-sized disc on the powerhead. If it matches the one on the plate, somebody has swapped hoods. If no match, who knows...maybe a mongrel

Re: 65 HP JOHNSON - WHAT YEAR???

Upon further investigation I can find no quarter sized disk with numbers. Not really sure where the power head is, I believe it is on top with the teeth and timing marks on it. It has, however been put in a different case. The case it is in has a hole where a choke went and is now being used for the wiring to the control box with the throttle lever and a toggle for the choke. There is another knob for something that is not connected inside the case. It has all been changed. The tank is now a portable 6 gal. It has a tank under the deck that is not being used. The boat is a Bayliner 16 ft. I think the original engine was a Merc. I had already ordered the manual, was a little spendy, but hopefully will be of some use. Still not sure what I have just hope I can make it run. Thanks again! Leont

I'm not sure this will help but I have a '76 35hp and my 1/4 size disc is near the coils on the starboard side.

Re: 65 HP JOHNSON - WHAT YEAR???

Thanks, looked on the starboard side and no quarter sized plate. I think it is either a 65 or 75 HP. Has 3 carbs with elec choke set up. It fired once then I flooded it. Looked up the starting procedure that I was given above and had a leak on one side of the bulb on the fuel line. Corrected that and will try to start it again today. Has been raining since I brought it home. Thanks again everyone. Have always had I/O this is my 1st outboard, gonna be fun! Leont

Re: 65 HP JOHNSON - WHAT YEAR???

Just as an added note: It appears to be a 1972 65HP. Changed the impeller and added a thermostat,(had been removed). Took pictures to a marina in Mountain Home. Mech. there said it was a 72 or 73, think 72. There were two models that year but not sure which one yet. Parts so far are interchangeable. Now getting water out the port and no overheat alarm. Will take it to the lake next week. Will also check the forums for tune-up procedures along with the manual. Thanks to all for your input.
