Powerboat Reports. They do reviews of boat, electronics, pretty much anything to do with boating. They are the sister publication to Sailboat Reports so articles/evaluations/reviews that are applicable to both are published in both. Powerboats are reviewed in Powerboat Reports only. Neither accept advertising.

You should understand the differences in the three basic hull designs and their relationship to different power/motors, drives, etc. I suggest getting your hands on this easy to read/understand book:

Getting Started In Powerboating by Bob Armstrong ISBN 0-07-003095-2

Also, find a class in basic boating safety and take it now, before you buy. The class is free (US Power Squadron) to dirt-cheap (USCG Auxiliary). You should be taking it anyways but doing so before you buy will give you a change to understand procedures that may influence you decision. You will definitely be looking at boats differently. Also you will have a change to meet/talk with other people that have who-knows-what kind of vessels
maybe even get yourself invited onto a few before you need to make a decision.
