Magazine Subscriptions

I'm in the process of buying a new boat. I was going to purchase one this fall, but I have decided to hold off until spring so that I can do some good reading on models, brands, etc. That leads me to my question:<br /><br />What magazines does everyone subscribe to that have good information about new models, product reviews, boater tips, etc.? I'm looking for something mainstream with some clout, not "Bobby Joe's Boat Ride's" if you know what I mean... <br /><br />Thanks for your input!!<br /><br />Sean

Can't help ya, but don't rule out B.J.B.R. as he's not as likely to be afraid to point out shortcomings of a boat because he probably doesn't have to worry about losing big advertising dollars after publishing a bad review! Good idea you've got to really research and figure out just what kind and make of boat suits your needs though - good luck! You might also find a screamin' deal on a slightly used boat this time of year too, after someone else has taken the big depreciation hit.

The boat reviews in the popular magazines are all sugar coated. There is one publication that is considered the "Consumer Reports" of boat reviews but the name eludes me. I post the name if I happen to remember it.

I suscribe to "Boating" they have several reviews every month and some tips on fixing and a few question and answer pages.I like it a lot!! Charlie

Powerboat Reports. They do reviews of boat, electronics, pretty much anything to do with boating. They are the sister publication to Sailboat Reports so articles/evaluations/reviews that are applicable to both are published in both. Powerboats are reviewed in Powerboat Reports only. The class is free (US Power Squadron) to dirt-cheap (USCG Auxiliary). You should be taking it anyways but doing so before you buy will give you a change to understand procedures that may influence you decision. You will definitely be looking at boats differently. Also you will have a change to meet/talk with other people that have who-knows-what kind of vessels…maybe even get yourself invited onto a few before you need to make a decision. <br /><br /> http://www.usps.org

I suscribe to "Trailer Boats" each month they review several boat models. They mostly cover boats from 18 to 24 feet and their reviews are very infomative and in-depth.

Thanks for the info 18rabbit.<br /><br />I actually used to be in the USCG Auxiliary (Coast Guard Station Green Bay). I second the "Trailer Boats" magazine. It provides lots of practical info in the average joe language. It's bi monthly suscription enables you to read and digest the info before you pull the next one out of the mailbox.<br /><br />You may want to visit a bookstore and review several different suscription alternatives and go with the one that meets your prevailing interests and needs.<br /><br />Kevin<br /><br />Kevin.

I looked at the trailer boats magazine and it looks good -- something along the lines of what I'm looking for. Especially since I am looking to buy a boat I can trailer! That was what I was looking for, something that did reviews of boats I can afford, rather than the $120,000 luxury boats that I will never get... at least not next year... <br /><br />Sean
