i would like to know the difference in the Johnson "STINGER" and a regular 65hp motor of the same year. the motor i have came from the factory painted solid orange except for the top where it has STINGER written in large letters. it also has the words "THE MEAN MACHINE" written on it.

All from a somewhat dusty clouded memory but I believe the Stinger was a hotter motor. I believe you were able to get it with a 15" shaft for use on a racing hull. There might have been differances in the lower gear case too.

Bob

Z-man on those Stinger engines there is NO difference between the standard production engines and the orange engines. That was a different paint job (actually decals and paint).
Just something different to sell. Because they did offer it in short shaft, it was an obvious choice for racing, also because it was the only loop charged other than the 50 hp in the Johnson line, and ran strong against the Mercs. Later short shaft models had the smaller gearcase because the only reason there was for a short shaft was racing, production boats had left the 15" transom and gone to 20" on most except the smaller jon boats.
Backfire ;)

I'm looking at buying one of these engines. The thing I don't know about it is if these are electric shift engines. Does anyone know?

It may be an electric shift and then it may not be. Johnson quit making hydroelectrics in 1972, I think. So you are on the edge. Also the 72 year model saw an ignition change, changing from points to a sensor. If its a 73 its probably not hydroelectric. You will just have to look at it. Hydroelectrics have no shift rod.

There was a special 'hotter' 15" version of the 75hp, at least according to my OMC test prop sheet.
