Re: Adding a fuel pump

Boats use a diaphram type pump that runs on crank pressure. There may be a plug to the crank cavity on your motor for this, or maybe another style had a pump?. If plug is there; I would get a pump off an old snowmobile(many 2-strokes have them) and mount it in there. The diaphram just flutters in there with little one-way valves to pump. This may be easier if you have no 12volt power.

Re: Adding a fuel pump

This info came from Wayne at brokeboats.com
credit where credit is due.

"The best way to convert to a one hose tank and pump is to locate a later
model junk motor with a fuel pump.
Most dealers and shops have a junk pile of old motors and will sell parts
pretty cheap, especially if you're willing to dig through the pile.
The parts you need are the transfer port cover and the fuel pump that is
mounted on it.
Don't worry about the condition of the pump as rebuild kits are readily
available, easy to install, and only a few bucks.
Wear some clothes you don't mind getting a little grease on and I would take
my transfer port cover along to ensure a proper match.
Remember that the dealer isn't making much trying to sell you a used part
off a junk motor so think of it more as a favor instead.
The transfer port covers (one per cylinder) are located on the side of block
and held on with 4-7 screws depending on model.
If you absolutely can't find a cover and fuel pump you could drill, thread,
and install a hose fitting in the intake area and use a 3 hose fuel pump
from a 70's 3 cylinder motor. That would be a last ditch attempt and I would
have a qualified technician help with the installation.
There were factory supplied conversion kits available at one time and you
may be able to still find one at a long established dealer in his NOS (new
old stock listing)."

Forgot to mention the info in my last post was in regard to a 56 Johnson, whether or not it applies to Evinrude I don't know

Hello.
You should try to get hold of a seloc book for engines up to 40 horse for engines from '56 to '70.
You will find a very precise description of how to install a vacuum driven fuel pump that gets the vacuum from your engine.
You can use fuel pumps off later omc models.
This is by far the best way to go,especially since most 58 omc engines do not have generators.
Another way ,but not a great one,to say the least, is to stick an inline LOW pressure 12 volt fuel pump (auto motive)somewhere on your fuel line.In either case you will have to plug up the air pressure outlet on your engine. The one your air hose is connected to.
good luck.

You may want to consider buying a Seloc manual from a local source. I've been trying to get one on eBay for months. They seem to go for a premium price and with shipping you end up saving maybe 3 or 4 dollars over a brand new one you don't have to wait for. They have em on the shelf at my local marine supply.

Just my opinion
Jim

Re: Adding a fuel pump

Iwent through the same thing with local dealers 10 years ago. I called dad, he had 2 converted engines. In my case I bought a newer fuel pump, pulled off one of the intake port plates and used the old plate (and made a new one out of 1/4" aluminum) as as a template for the mounting holes so i would have a flat surface. I drilled a hole thru the plate in the center of the mounting position for the fuel pump to draw vacuum to operate the pump. I bought a single hose inlet to attach to the engine case. ran a hose to the fuel pump, then the carb(s)?. I plugged the pressure hole out of the engine block as stated earlier. Its been running for ten years with no problems
