What Fuel Pump Do I Need?

I have a '73 6 HP Evinrude and I took it out on the water today for the first time. It ran great pulling away from the dock for about 3 minutes then it cut off. Then it would cut off about 2 minutes after starting it over and over. I'm assuming it is the fuel pump that is causing the problem.

Can somebody tell me exactly what fuel pump I need and where I can purchase one? I called West Marine and they said they have to order it from Sierra and it would take 3 weeks to get in. Are there any websites online that sell them?

Thanks,

Jeff

Hello Loopit,
Isn't the gas tank on top of the engine on this motor? If so you probly don't have a fuel pump. Open the vent on top of the fill cap.
Let us know

If your motor uses a remote tank you need to check the hose and fittings under the hood too to be sure of no leaks gas or air.Be sure vent is open on tank. Check primer bulb if it is colapsing the vent is plugged or turned off or there is a blockage between the tank and the bulb.
Be sure any filters in the system are clean. If an integral tank check for good flow to carb. There could be water in the system Wouldnt hurt to drain tank and check gas for water and junk.Be very careful with gasoline, fumes can be very explosive and are heavy.Always work in the open.
Good luck, Spike

I believe it has a fuel pump but I just did some searching for Evinrude Fuel Pumps and couldn't find anything under a '74.

I have a 6 gallon remote tank and I poured out the old gas that was in there before I bought the motor. I added 3 gallons of 87 octane and a half a pint of TWC-3 Pennzoil Marine oil.

When I started off with the boat the vent was still closed on the tank. I later realized I had to open it after 4 starts or about 10 minutes after the motor was running.

I'm not really sure what you mean by primer bulb. Is that the round thing that needs to be squeezed to pump gas into the motor? If that is what you mean it is really soft when I go to start the motor then after a couple of squeezes it gets hard.

I also took the hose off of where it hooks into the engine and squeezed the pump and gas came out without any problems.

Jeff

Will the engine keep running if you keep squeezing the primer ball?

I squeezed it several times while it was running for about 2 minutes one time and it still konked out, but I only tried it once.

It seems like this would work if it isn't pumping in fuel correctly. If I take it out again before working on the motor some more I would like to try this a few more times to see if it does indeed work.

Jeff
