my motor jumps out of gear like it has a slip clutch in the prop,it does it at different speeds.could this be a worn dog in the lower unit this same thing happened on another motor and it would only run in reverse?

Larry If it clunks it is probably the dogs. it
is normal for them to wear out but you can make them last longer. Slow the boat and motor as much as possible before you shift. When you shift do it crisply.Dont mash it in but dont drag it either. Spike

that engine shouldnt slip out of gear
there is a mechansm in those to stop that , it may have been removed
remove the hood and look at the front left of the engin near the shift lever
is there a part that moves when u move the lever , it should move with the throttle too its designed nbot to let you over rev in neutral and not to slip out of gear when over 1/4 throttle
