Please help anyone!!! I hit a stump while going in reverse and the motor qiut. When i tried to start it had no spark. I have checked my flywheel and it did not shear key, when i crank motor i have voltage from pickup and from advance going to cdi or powerpack. yet i have lost spark on three cylinders. i disconnected black with yellow stripe at powerpack as i was told this is safety lockout wire and still no spark. my flywheel has magnetism and is timed ok. I have 13.8 volts to the round cylindrical thing to the upper right of powerpack which i do not know what that is. Please help .

Re: 70HP Johnson 1986-No Spark

Hi Jdhals,
The round thing that you refered to is the rectifier that changes the AC voltage comming from under the flywheel to DC to keep the battery charged.
As for the problem; if you checked the charge coil voltages(brown & brown/yellow) leads, and the sensor coil voltages and you still don't have spark on any cylinder then I would suspect the power pack. Did you remove the black/yellow lead going to the pack and still had no spark? If so then I would definitely suspect the power pack.
Hope this is of some help

Re: 70HP Johnson 1986-No Spark

three voltages to contend with:

>battery charging system voltage

>CDI charge coil voltage

>trigger coil voltage

Did you measure all three?
What were your readings?
What tools did you use?

Proper voltage tests will lead to the problem, but if they weren't taken properly, or with wrong tools, you'll spend money for nothing......

thanks for responses-- well i am using a fluke 97 multimeter to do tests--- as for trigger voltage what color wires should be checked and for what voltage? Please help more

Fluke 97 is an awsome tool in the right hands!

How much did you get for voltage on the CDI charge coil?

The trigger wires should be:
white=(common)
purple
green
blue

for voltages, Click me

Re: 70HP Johnson 1986-No Spark

ok- now we are getting somewhere- all i need now is to know which color wires blue, purple, and green are for what coils?? I have the chart and know how to test with the exeption of not having the fluke adapter. please help more- all is appreciated.

Re: 70HP Johnson 1986-No Spark

what adapter are you referring to? Can't you capture spike with the standard leads? Even min/max might do....never tried it.

If yo want to find which color wire is for what cylinder, just disconnect one and see which cylinder lacks spark.......etc.

Re: 70HP Johnson 1986-No Spark

the adapter i was referring to is listed on outboards.com to use when checking ignition system. anyway my stator reads 11ohms on all three coils and puts out .06v when cranking. service manaul calls for 17ohms and .3v output. I think these are a little low yet i dont want spend 200 bucks on stator to find out that was not it as the dealers i contacted said no returns on electrical. anyone have any other ideas i'm boggled. Please Help

Re: 70HP Johnson 1986-No Spark

>did you try for spark with black/yellow wire disconnected?
>did you disconnect all related connectors and inspect for corrosion or pushed back terminals within the plugs?
>did you check for loose or corroded ground wires?
>did you measure the CDI charge voltage? (should be 150 volts or better)

The short of it is......measure the charge and trigger voltages. If they are normal, replace pack.
The problem is, if you don't use a peak reading adapter, or DVA adapter, you're just guessing, and guessing will cost you money..... :(

Re: 70HP Johnson 1986-No Spark

schematic- I am using max trigger lock on fluke 97. I am getting 250 voltz on charge coil and all connectors have been checked and cleaned. My question is can a stator give 11 ohms on three coils and output .06v on all three coils and be bad?? Is it common to get same test results on all three coils when it has failed?? And second is there anyway to insert .5v into pack to test it? your help is much appreciated. Oh yeah one more thing- does a resistor have to be used inline when testing stator voltage. I am a Electronics technician but no experience on boat motors.

Re: 70HP Johnson 1986-No Spark

I'm jumping in and maybe you are looking for Schematic's responce, but I would say that the charge coil and sensor coil voltages are good. That leaves the power pack. I know of no way to check it other than to replace it. I doubt that all of the spark plug coils whet bad at the same time. Have you made sure that you have a good ground at the pack?

I agree with Almost retired again, the stator and timer voltages look ok.

Re: 70HP Johnson 1986-No Spark

Schematic, would you please explain to me what your circuit does , in a previous posting of yours
some time ago you promised to come up with a circuit for a dva adapter, as somebody that need's
an adapter I was wondering if that's the purpose of your circuit.. and could you please say what the green and blue component's are for those of us that
are electronically challenged Thank,s Jim

Re: 70HP Johnson 1986-No Spark

Well thanks to all for your help! After numerous tests I decided it was the power pack. Replaced it and it has spark and runs well. Who would have thunk a dang stump could do that to a power pack. Happy troubleshooting.
