I have a 67 Johnson 18hp motor what would be the mixture ratio for the oil I mix in.

50:1 was the original and still-valid recommendation.

Re: Gas & Oil mixture ratio

I'm brand new to this forum. I have a 6 horse Johnson. I'm seeking the oil/gas ratio and everything I'm seeing is 50:1. Mine is anywhere from a 70's through late 80's model. Was there ever a different oil/gas ratio? I don't want to blow her up or foul her out. Thanks.

1978 70hp

I added 14oz into what I thought was a mostly empty tank. (The fuel in the tank was mixed correctly, 1 pint for 6gal because it was the first fill-up of a new gas tank.) So, I added the 14oz in, THEN pulled the tank out of the boat to find that the tank had 4 gal in it instead of almost empty, and I squeezed 2 gallons into the tank.

On the water the engine ran great for about 2 minutes then bogged down terribly to 2500rpm and 10mph. I stopped to see if I picked up fishing line or something. After sitting for 10 minutes, I started back up and it ran good for a minute, then bogged down again.

Could this be the improper mixed fuel? Probably more like 30:1 instead of 50:1.

I am running Seafoam through right now in the driveway (water muffs). 1 pint Seafoam mixed with 3/4 gallon of fuel+2oz oil per the FAQ how-to. After 15 minutes of running fast idle (~1500rpm), the smoke went from transparent to white. It's now sat for 15 minutes and I'm off to run it some more.

Man there's a lot to learn.

TOO much thread hijacking . Got a question of your own, then hit the "Create new post" button and start a new thread

As I already said all OMC engines from 1964 onwards will run on 50:1 That includes those produced in the second half of the 1980s for which the handbook or the decals may suggest 100:1.
See http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/About.Us/FAQ/Oil.Fuel.htm

A 30:1 mix, which I agree is approximately what you have ended up with, is unlikely to have caused any problems. The break in mixture when the engine was new was probably 25:1 anyway. If you find plug fouling does occur then try opening the gap out to its original recommended setting of 0.040" until you get back to the correct 50:1 mix.

yes, before the mid-60s there were some variety of mixtures, usually 24:1 or (I think) 36:1. But of course that doesn't apply to your engine as you've already figured out. I even remember the day when we mixed 24:1 with regular motor oil, then my dad got a Merc at 50:1 and Quicksilver oil in snazzy cans. Seemed so modern.
