My old step dad gave me an evinrde 6-horse year unknown to me. When he gave it to me, he said it was stuck in reverse, but if I could fix it I could have it. I did my best and was about to give up on it when I decided to try brute force. I pulled hard on the shifter till I heard a loud snap and a suddenly very loose shift lever. I thought it was busted completely now. I slowly pulled the recoil, and much to my surprise, the prop turned the other way. Victory! Not quite. I told my stepdad aout it and he said he did the same thing, but when he brought it out to the lake it got stuck again. What should I do? What makes it stick? I haven't tried it yet. Should I just go for it or what? Any help would be appreciated. thanks

brandon

baker88
Let's see, he never repaired it, brute force surely broke another piece. (1) Take it to an Evinrude dealer and get it fixed. (2)Buy a manual for the unmentioned model number engine and have a learning experience.
Backfire ;)

Near the propellor there are two crew holding it on. Yake em out! an when you pull this out there is goin to b a little pin falling out and a lot of oil. DO not take the gears on the propellor out. this pin that falls out is the shift pin. If it is broken you need a new one. To put it back in put the pin ito the back end of the propellor and gears and insert back in. fill it back up with lube oil!

-Bill
how old are you I m 15?

I fixed about 30 of these in our rental fleet at lake skinner. What you have is a bad prop seal and water has gotten into your gear case. Not to worry yet. Pull prop and remove the two bolts holding the prop housing to the lower end. the gear that comes out with the shaft and housing is your reverse gear. Look at the back of the housing there should be a lip extending about a quarter of an inch beyond the plate. What happens is when you loose the seal the oil goes out and water comes in and the reverse gear rubs the back of the prop housing grinding it down flat. When this happens the motor locks in reverse. Check for damage and replace the housing and reinstall with fresh oil and all will be fine.

Thanks for all your suggestions guys. i can make a motor run, but I've never had to work on the mechanical parts of the lower unit. I'll be trying out your suggestions as soon as work and the kids allow. By the way, Bill, I'm a bit older than 15 :D
