after hours (2 or 3) of use, i loose charging and tach. If I leave it alone for an hour or so, it comes back. Is the rectifier thermally protected? can it be something other than the rectifier?

Hmmm... Normally they either work, or they don't. Your charging system components include the stator, the rectifier/regulator, the associated wiring and the battery. How do you know the chaging system has "quit"? Dash mounted volt-meter by chance?? If so, look under the dash and see if you don't have a loose ground wire (black) or hot wire (purple). My only other thought at this point is the stator to rectifier regulator connector on the motor. Remove the top covers and check the connector (large gauge yellow & yellow with silver stripe).

-John

Your water cooled reg/rec may be trying to bad on you too. Sometimes air can get trapped at the top of the block and the unit gets hot.

Good luck!
