My motor is a 40 HP Johnson Electromatic (2 stroke) RKL 27A (1965) I bought it last season and I think it may need to be looked at. Any input is appreciated. Problems are outlined below. I do own the service manual but I'm no mechanic and would not try to repair it myself.

Problem one: Idles rough and stalls out. If I am in neutral it begins to shake and then stalls. Did this last season and this season.

Problem two: I have had the boat out twice in the last week (first two times this season) . After trip one I was back home and I lowered the motor. When I did this I noticed a white substance and some gas dripped out at the bottom. A few days later while out fishing (with motor off) I noticed gas on the water behind the boat, at one point a series of big waves rocked the boat and I saw white spots in the water. They would float to the surface and then dissipate.

Any thoughts are appreciated, I'll probably have to take it in before using it again.

Giddyup

Kramer

Get a manual.

Probably needs a good tune up. Start with cleaning the carbs, plugs and more than likely you should pull the flywheel and claen all the contacts.

AND Check your lower unit oil. See if it is milky or some may be leaking out. The gas on the water is probably due to a carb or ignition problem. Unburned fuel is making it to the water which would account for the rough running and stuttering.

good luck.

Bob

hello kramer
i am no expert at all but i am awaiting a post so i will do my best. white in my experience is bottom end oil mixed with water. it looks like milk. if a milky substance is leaking from the bottom end (lower unit) it has a leak in one of the many seals. its fairly easy to check and not too expensive normally to fix. gas is nowhere near the lower unit, i assume what you are seeing is oil.

Howdy, Kramer.

I noticed that you have a manual but don't want to work on your engine.

You have symptoms of float trouble in at least one carburetor. You also have symptoms of a leak in the gearcase. Both should be investigated and repaired.

Good luck. :)
