40 HP Evinrude Slips When Throttled Up

I have a 1960's 40 hp Evinrude which was running fine last fall, and suddenly started slipping, as if weeds were around the propeller. The propeller will only engage at idle. As soon as I throttle up, it seems to slip. I checked the shear pin and it looks fine. Could fouled spark plugs cause this kind of behavior? Any suggestions?

spun prop hub? I think you check it by marking the inside of the hub and the shaft in a straight line, watertest, and see if the marks you made are still in line.

Thanks Mike from Mims, Florida. A spun prop hub sounds like the answer. Is this something that I can fix myself or does it have to be taken to a Prop shop?

Thanks.

Hi Piker,
Sounds like it's spun pretty bad. You should be able to check it out easily. With the ignition turned off and the motor in gear, try to turn the prop by hand. If the prop turns and the prop nut stays stationary then it's spun. You will have to take it to a prop shop to have a new bushing pressed in. It's usually less than 50 bucks for the repair.

Good luck
