hi all
1960 40 hp johnson, where carb mounts to motor
there is a little black roller thats looks like
it should ride along a cam under flywheel, looks to me that there should be a spring or linkage hooked to carb ,witch is it and where does it hook in?
Thanks river run

Howdy River Run.

You figured it out well.

The roller is on the carb linkage. Right?

Its function is to synchronize the ignition timing with throttle setting by moving a cam on the magneto plate against a spring. If the spring breaks or the plate gets stuck you lose synch and would probably have poor running at low speed.

Good luck. :)

Hi riverrun
The spring hooks under the roller as you note. Then it hooks to a little hole located on the crankcase or intake manifold. So as to hold the roller against the cam. The other end of shaft that the cam is on hooks to the carb via linkage.

Thanks alcan
The spring thats hooks to the intake manifold was on the motor ,There seams like there should be a spring going from the bottom of the arm that the wheel is on going back to carb, In order to hold wheel against cam it looks like the spring
should be pulling back ,the wheel is on a ( L ) shaped arm that pivets at the 90" wheel would be at top of L and a hole at the bottom for spring or linkage , i must be missing something
thanks again
river run
