Spark advance causing engine to bog

I have a 76 140 horse evinrude that seems to have a mechanical problem with the spark advance when I throttle up. I have a Clymer's outbord shop manual but it doesn't go into much detail about the linkage so some of my terminology may not be exactly right. First, when I throttle up the spark advance is not moving in conjunction with the throttle. I have to manually go back to the engine and move it. There seems to be a lot of sideways slop in my linkage at the pivot point for the throttle arm and the spark advance arm. Also what ever the connecting rod for the spark advance is hooked up to, and here I'm guessing because I haven't taken the flywheel off yet, seems to rotate with a lot of drag on it. I'm guessing this is the armature plate. The engine runs well if I sit at the engine and work the throttle and spark advance manually but from the drivers seat it pukes out. are there any manuals that go into a little more detail about the linkage, and parts list so that if and when I tear it apart I know exactly what I'm looking at and what parts I need to order. I know already that there is what seems to be a small plastic bushing that the throttle and spark advance arm pivot on that is cracked and I know there shouldn't be as much side to side play as what I have in the linkage so this bushing may be worn. And I can't find any info on what or where the connecting rod for the spark advance hooks up under the flywheel. I will be monitoring this post and adding any details as they come up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanx in advance

Sounds like a factory manual might be your best bet. Yes, you are correct in thinking its time to replace (missing) bushings. The timer base under the flywheel should move very freely. It may require removing the flywheel and stator and cleaning the delron (plastic) ring. Add a little lube and you should be good to go.

Good luck!

Try your Evinrude or Johnson dealer. Since you have an aftermarket manual and it doesnt show what you need I would go to the factory deal. They may be reluclant to sell you one but if you buy your parts from them and establish a relationship they most likely will help.

Good luck

Come to think of it, even if you have to pay them to do it (in case you dont have the puller and air guns etc) it shouldnt take any more than an hours labor at the most.

Sorry for the afterthought!

Re: Spark advance causing engine to bog

Thanx. I'll probably try and get the manual and do it myself. I have most of the tools I need and I'll buy whatever I don't have. I enjoy doing the work myself and I do have a pretty good relationship with the local evinrude parts supplier, he's seen me quite a bit lately. Thanks again for all the help. by the way I used the engine tuner you told me about and it freed up the engine immensely. i can now turn the flywheel easily even with the spark plugs in. I had to replace the starter because it may have burned up trying to turn over the engine with all the carbon build up.

Thax again for everything. I found a place to order manuals online. Mastertech Marine, www.maxrules.com. They have service manuals, owners manuals and parts catalog. I'm sure with the correct manuals, my local service center and all the help from everyone at Iboats.com I'll be up and running like new in no time.
