I have a 1989 Johnson outboard engine. 140hp V4. Last year I must have picked up some bad gas. Before I got my boat on the water this year I emptied the gas tank and found that there was about 5 or 6 gallons of water in the tank. I cleaned all of it out and put new spark plugs in and a new gas filter. I still cant get the frigen thing running. I checked all the plugs and they are all firing. I cant figure out why it wont start. Someone please help me. I have put all new gas in the boat and a bottle of dry gas from Napa. I dont know what else to do. Please help me. Thanks

Howdy, Moses.

Your fuel pump may have drowned. Though it doesn't seem likely, you may also have 2 gummed up carbs.

Squirt some fuel mix into the carb throats and try to start it again. If she tries to run, overhaul the pump and both carbs.

Good luck. :)

Re: 1989 Johnson 140hp Water in Tank

There is more to the story to. Last year at the end of the summer the boat started to have problems running and the very last time I went out it would not run at all. I decided not to get it fixed till spring. I took the boat to get winterized and supposedly they did but the problem is that in order to do that the boat has to run. So I dont know what they did or did not do all I know is that I drained the gas/water mix, put all new gas and dry gas in plus drained the carbs and everything else and still it will not fire at all. Please help.
