I have a 58 johnson 18 that calles for a pressurized fuel tank, I never heard of such a thing,I tried gravity feed and the motor runs great as long as theres fuel so I hate to get rid of it, does anyone know where I can get one ,or a simple solution , hopefully not involving an electric fuel pump? Its' on a sailboat and Iwould prefer to go without a battery. Thanks

Re: pressurized fuel tank??

Terry, I recently posted a smilar question. Supposedly you can used a fuel pump off of a later model 18-25 hp but you will have to add a pulse line (like a small vacuum hose). I would have to look at another motor to see how to do the pulse line thing. I was also told I could add an electric fuel pump and it needed to be like 3.5 psi to make the motor run. I'm wanting to convert my old 15 hp motor to a single line. I guess that will be a winter project if I ever get around to it.

Hi Guys
Do a search of this board on this subject. There has been volumes writen about this conversion. It's really not too tough. And I wouldn't bother with the electric pump idea. If you find a used persure tank, great, but you will probably have to over haul it to make it dependable. Ether way you go it's going to be a $100. or so.

Re: pressurized fuel tank??

I get tired trying to hold my snowblower gas tank 2 foot above my motor.

The add on later model fuel pump sounds like the way to go , I'll look farther back into forum for more detail . Thanks
Terry

This is a pressurized gas tank: Pressurized Gas Tank

Pressurized Gas Tank

There are two hoses on for AIR and one for FUEL. Air pressurizes the gas tank, which acts like a juice box when you blow in the straw, and forces gas up the other line to the carb.

The biggest reason for converting your motor is that the tanks are getting hard to find. Check out Ebay motors and do a search for "Pressurized Gas Tanks".

Re: pressurized fuel tank??

You must have recently gotten hold of the '58 if you are just discovering it needs a dual line tank. It can be changed to a regular single line feed, as other listers are indicating, but you may not want to mess around with it -- and I believe it's easier to rebuild a pressure tank in reasonably good condition than to convert to a fuel pump. (I've done both.) In addition, if you have a working pressure tank as part of the package, you have a more attractive motor for collectors. I guess I'm not sure how you are getting it up and running without some of the parts of the old pressure tank assembly (the inlet at the motor, for example). But unless you have a special interest in running the '58, it might not be the most practical choice for a working motor on your sailboat.

Re: pressurized fuel tank??

My brother had it stuck in a corner of his garage and when I mentioned that I needed something with a pull start he said I could have it for free!!
My other engine was a chrysler 20 hp --70s and had no pull start so if the battery went dead, which it did I had to be towed to the dock.
Not an easy thing on a busy lake with an old 26 ft. sailboat.
This a very low budget project. my brother found an old tank in his garage labled johnson mile master , it has a small pump-air +fuel line
do you think this may be the correct tank??
Thanks , Terry

Re: pressurized fuel tank??

I have a 1957 Evinrude 5.5hp Fisherman with a pressure tank. The tank is metal, with 6 gals capacity. It has a handle and on one side of the handle there is a screw on cap (lots of threads) with a gasket. On the other side of the handle there is a little black button. This is the primer button which you use to initially get the fuel to the engine when starting. There are 2 lines out of the tank, one says fuel and the other says air. If your tank is something like this it's the right one. You have a double fuel line and a special fitting with air and fuel on it.
