Anyone know anything about this model Johnson? All I know it's a 88hp with tilt and trim. I know of one for sale but haven't been able to find anyone that's knows anything about this model. Thanks

It's a V4 crossflow. Old technology but I think they are great motors. Don't lug it (commonly called "overpropping" - bad description) and it will live forever.

Good luck and have fun!

Thanks Dhadley, sounds like it might be a good one. Know more now than before. Should have mentioned that it is a 1996 model, don't know if that matters.

Before you buy, make sure you get it checked by a marine mechanic and take it for a lake test with the current owner in the boat. I recently bought a 1996 70hp after doing the inspection but no lake test. 20 minutes on the lake (after I paid for it) the powerhead went. Estimate for a rebuild was $3000 - 3500. Just trying to spare you the headache I have had for the last 6 weeks. Very painful!!

Peter O -- if you lost number 2 cylinder, make sure they richen up the mid range carb jets. If you have the carbs with the air jets you have to go samller to go richer.

Good luck!

Hello Dhadley,
It was the #2 and you replied to my earlier posts about the motor in late May. I decided to buy a 2002 Yamaha and sold the Johnson to a rebuilder. Thanks for your input now but especially back then.
