Re: tilt/trim trouble

If the tilt/trim has only stopped in one direction, it could be a relay. On my 1992 Johnson 100 the trim/tilt stopped working up. I followed the wires from the switch to the relay box. then I switched the relays and the unit only worked up. Went to the auto parts store and replaced the relay.

Thanks Larry, but no. I had power on the motor, but It didn't run.I will meg the armature today, and If I can't find it, put it back together and test it. If it works, then I'll put it down to brushes.

Re: tilt/trim trouble

We had a similar problem with our '91 Evinrude. If your trim control switch is on the Shift/Thottle Contoller at the driver, then it is similar to our setup. We ultimately found out that the wiring inside the control arm fractured and broke - thus causing our trim to lose one of its direction controls. The back and forth motion of this unit (as it is used to shifted or change speed) twists or bends the wires and one eventually fractured and broke over time. Depending on which particular wire goes first, will determine how the the control of your power trim will fail. Even though they try to design it not to fail and route the wires to minimize this type strain fracture (an important thing to note if you decide to replace the harness), it eventually fails - it is sometimes just how long and how much use.

Don't know about your control relays but if you can find them (ours were on the power head) you may be able to switch them and see if the problem switches to the other motion. If the problem "moves" to the opposite motion, then a relay may not be your problem.

We got a new harness and, in our case, found out there is a connector to plug to connect the new control switch and wire harness vs having to replace it all the way back to the engine.

good luck...

Re: tilt/trim trouble

I goofed up. My earlier respnse read "Don't know about your control relays but if you can find them (ours were on the power head) you may be able to switch them and see if the problem switches to the other motion. If the problem "moves" to the opposite motion, then a relay may not be your problem."

In fact what I had intended to say was that the relay may BE the problem since the failure moved when the relay ws swapped. Why I came back to this I don't know, just poking around, but I feel embarrassed about the error, I know better than I can type - hopfullly you figured out my intent.

Sorry

prophead
