I have a 2000 model evinrude 50hp 4-stroke that has been acting up since spring launch this year. Symptoms are 1) no acceleration of the engine beyond 2900rpm and 2) no stream of discharge water from below the powerhead. On acceleration to 2900rpm, the engine begins to rev up and down. Also, discharge water emerges from between the upper and lower units, instead of the normal exit hole.

Grateful for any thoughts or advice.

Coyote

Howdy, Coyote.

I am not an expert on SuziRude 4 stroke engines, but I suspect that your computer is limiting rpm because of poor cooling.

Get a manual or take it to an Evinrude shop. You seem to have a coolant flow problem.

Good luck. :)

If the temp light/alarm is not going off you do not have an overheat problem. The adjustable tell tale's on the Suzuki/Evinrude are prone to clogging - just remove the nozzle and clean it out. Also run the engine with the nozzle off for a few minutes to flush out any debris. If you do not have an alarm and the rev limiter is actuating without the rev limit light on, than the engine neutral safety switch is sticking or out of adjustment. The ECU thinks the engine is neutral and therefore is limiting engine speed.
