Hi! An old couple gave me an old Evinrude. Serial # 18304A100G499. The cover says 25HP but I
checked a Website and was told that it's a 1973 18HP. Can someone please verify? I installed
a recoil and tried to start up I rand for a few seconds and shut down. Now the crank is difficult to turn.
It is really hard to pull start. I'm new to all this and I can't afford to put a lot of money into this Any
advice you can give will be appreciated. Thanks Noel

You say it ran for a few minutes and shut down. Sounds like it either overheated or you ran straight gas through it and the cylinders are wanting to seize. you need to run a premix of 50:1 with a high quality two cycle oil. You may want to run the first tank at 32:1 if it has overheated. This will give additional lube for your pistons. It will smoke more but will help.

Thanks for the reply FIREMAN 757. Yeah I ran a 48-1 mix and when it started, it smoked a lot but shut down almost immediately. It started a second time. Same thing. Then it was difficult to turn the crank. I have to tell you I have limited 'any kind of engine' knowledge. Isn't water supposed to come out of the outlet? All I saw was lots of smoke. I don't think it has been run for a year. I did confirm that it's a 1973 18HP Evinrude.

Try taking the plugs out and cranking.Should turn
pretty freely. If it seems to drag or be stiff
with plugs out there could be more serious problems.
Sounds like you need to find a friend with some engine experience before you can do much trouble
shooting. If it shut down allmost imeadiatly you
probably have a fuel supply problem. If the plugs are wet and gassy the carb may be flooding.
You need a ser. manual if your short of cash try the library they usually have manuals for reference.Has anyone shown you the correct way to start your motor? If you can it would be good to clean and check the gap on your plugs.
Good luck.

Thanks Spike! Plugs out and still stiff to turn the crank. You're right I need someone experienced to check it out. Also the plugs were oily at the gap. You all should know how helpful this forum is even for 'fools" like me. All the best, Noel
