Does anybody know what the compression specs for an 87 Evinrude 140HP 4stroke should be? I'm looking at purchasing this motor ... so any other gotchas would be appreciated.

Minimum compression of 100 lb in each cylinder. I would feel better with 125 lb. Balance between the cylinders also important. More than 10-15 lb difference between cylinders is not good.

Thanx t.h. ... greatly appreciate! Have you worked with this motor before? ie. how does it perform?

I personally like these motors. The same block is used in a bunch of difference Johnson/Evinrude models. Do you know if the powerhead has ever been redone (pistons and/or rings, etc)?

Current owner indicated that they were redone a couple of years ago.

Why do you ask? (if this is a silly question ... I apologize ... this is my first motor purchase)

Was wondering about the history of the motor. This info might tell something about how the previous owner treated it.

Does this motor have VRO or does it use premix? What do the plugs look like? Get whatever info you can from the seller about maintenance (VRO, impeller, thermostats, etc). Probably the most important thing for the longevity of an outboard is maintenance.

Redrat we need a little more info. If the motor is a four stroke as you say there is no oil to mix. I believe you mean a 4 cylinder. You need to identify the year and model first, then do a search on that motor for common problems.

I'm assuming that he means a four cylinder two stroke. Got a model # for us?

Re: Need compression specs... Evinrude

RedRat, I have an '85 140 which I think is the same loop charged powerhead. I think the main difference between mine and the '87 is the '85 used the V6 gearcase and the newer ones use a smaller V4 gearcase. My motor has been superb, the VRO has always worked (there was a VRO II upgrade I installed in the motor's first few years).

The repairs needed have been very few. A voltage regulator/rectifier failed a number of years ago and prop shaft seals were needed several years ago (the failure was probably due to mono wrapped around the prop shaft, because there was some evidence of grooving on the shaft.

That's it, other than routine stuff like water pumps every few years, gear oil change every fall and new plugs every few years plus two decarb treatments. My engine has around 700 hours on it, still shows > 150 psi compression all around and runs great. One thing I attribute to lack of trouble was when motor was new I pulled the fly wheel and wrapped all of the under flywheel wiring with chafe protection material. I haven't had the flywheel off since.

This motor still turns ~ 5700 RPM WOT and idles great. In short, I've never had a better big outboard. Good luck.
