I need help. I have an 1956 Evinrude Fastwin 15, that is getting the best of me! I bought the motor not running of course. The motor will start for about 4 sec. and then stop. I sprayed carb cleaner in the throat when it was about to go and it continued to run a few more then... i have cleaned the carb 2 times. The gas tank I have is a 6 gallon pressure tank that appears to be clean. The glass is allways clean. any help out there.

Re: what else

wesbe - Did you purge every last drop of old fuel from the tank, lines, fuel filter & fuel pump? You mentioned that you cleaned the carb but did you disassemble it and install a new kit? Good time to replace the fuel lines while you are at it.

These would be the place to start if you have not already done so.

I would also replace the fuel pump (complete not just impeller)& plugs if you haven't done that. Should be good for another 46 years.

Hello.
Sounds to me that your engine is just fine. You can check this by hooking a hose to your carburator, feeding fuel in through gravitation and trying to start it that way.If you can get it running longer that way ,then the pressure tank is responsible for your troubles.
See if your pressure tank pump can pump the fuel to the carb and check if the tank holds pressure.
The Seloc book for your year and horse power has a very good section on pressure tank maintenance.
Good luck.

These old motors are very sensitive to carb adjustments. Turn the low speed all the way in and back it out 1.5 turns, then turn the high speed in and back it out ¾ of a turn. Once you get it running fine tune each from there.

Re: what else

The only thing I didn't do is put an kit in the carb. But, I got the motor running at an idle. The only problem is that there is a huge amount of smoke boiling out from the start. any thoughts? I dont want to burn up anything!
