What needs to be done??

I have a 1975 Evinrude 70 Hp 3 Cyl motor that on initial start and warm-up it runs great, put it in gear and stays running, the problem comes in a minute or 2 after I have been idling in gear. The engine will stall and then it is a bear to restart. After it does restart, I have to let it run about 30 seconds or so and then it will keep running once placed back in gear. If I place it back in gear immediately after restarting it will die. Does this sound like I need a carb rebuild or just adjustments made. Seems as though it is possible loading up. After the restart occurs I get alot of smoke from the exhaust and then it will slowly disappear. Also, boat runs great when it is actually running, the motor is on a 1975 Glastron 15 ft and with 4 people I run right at 34-35 mph. Little slow out of the hole. What can one do to get the boat to plane out a little quicker and come out of the hole better. Haven't tried to pull a skier but the way it comes out of the hole I know it wouldn't get them up.. Thanks for any advice...

When was it's last tune up? Plugs, de-carb, timing adjustment? When you state it runs along good I would agree.

Bob
