Re: motor oil

G'Day, Alan.

Because you are unfamiliar with the engine you really need an Operator/Owner Manual. I suggest that you also get a shop manual.

There are too many opportunities to damage the engine to count on the internet to train you in its operation.

Good luck. :)

Re: motor oil

Manuals will be a great help, but will probably not answer most of the mechanical theory questions you have posted.

Basically, you have a gas tank and a two-stroke oil reservoir. A mechanism on the motor determines oil consumption based on some factor (RPMs maybe?) and draws it from the reservoir as needed.

The no-oil (and low oil) alarms are determined by some sensors in the oiling unit and reservoir.

Faith and time determines how well all of this really works.

Some owners will probably tell you to disconnect the oiling unit altogether and just run premix, but there are thousand of these motor running just fine as-is.

The easiest way to tell if the the oiling unit is working (according to my Johnson manual) is to measure the level in the oil reservoir (use a pencil mark if the reservoir is translucent)and run premix gas until you see the reservoir level drop. A bit smoky but works.

Have fun.

Re: motor oil

Your post was not clear on what kind of oil you are using. Use only TCW-3 outboard oil for 2 cycle outboard motors.

Re: motor oil

This engine uses a very reliable mechanical oil injeciton pump. No need to premix. The indicaiton light will only come on if something is wrong...like you are extremely low on oil. Keep it full of oil and you won't need to worry about the light.

The best way to determine if your outboard is using the right amount of oil is to measure the amount of gasoline and oil used over a given run time cycle (the longer the better). You generally want a 40:1 to 60:1 ratio.

There are 128 ounces in one gallon. So for a 50:1 gas/oil ratio you would want to use 2.56 ounces of oil for every gallon of gasoline. Of course idling vs. running full throttle will affect oil useage. You can use your wife's baking cup thingy to measure ounces of oil :) .
