I recently changed the water pump in my 40 hp evinrude, it's a late 60's, anyway i cant get any water coming out the back, i made sure my tubes went into place, i am almost positive i put the impeller in the right way, could it be my thermostat and does water only come out the back when the thermostat is open ? thank you for any info.

most generally the only time you will see water comming out the holes in the back are when the engine has reached temp. or at wide open throttle
at least that has been my exp. and i have never melted one down.

hi ole, did it pump water out of pee hole before pump change ,if so check over what work you did before you take it out on the water ,firstly check for blockage of pee pipe by threading a short length of wire up it with engine running .as for pump rotor, most will simply correct themselves within a few rotations if installed backwards (accidentally) . hope this helps ,but if it fails to pump out and motor gets hot you may have to check that the tube to the power head from the pump is in place correctly

Ole, I have an 83 50hp evinrude - just got water to start coming out the pee hole. During replacement of the impellar, I didn't get the water tube placed in the impellar housing. Didn't have any flow from the pee hole. Now, after fixing that, water flows out all the time, regardless of warm - up.
Don't know if this helps, as these are different years.

Do you have a manual? My Clymer's was very helpful.

Jason

I too just recently changed out a water pump on an older model such as yours. Mine too continued to run hot enen after that. My problem turned out to be that the pump was sucking air around the base of the pump housing. The new o ring by itself is not enough by itself to create a good seal. You should add some good marine quality adhesive sealant (not silicone) around the perimiter of the bottom wear plate and where it touches and then again around the housing o ring. After assembling, wait a few hours before testing.
Hope this helps,
JS

On your engine, water only comes out the top hole when the thermostat is open. That is not a pee hole like other engines have. It also has exhaust gases exiting there.

Most of your water exits below the waterline. If you have some spray out the top hole after it warms up, then it is working normally.

To see if the impellor is working, remove the thermostat cover at the top back of the head. Water should pour out as soon as the engine starts.
