1995 200HP Johnson Ocean Runner Counter Rotating Model

I just installed a new water pump. With the shift shaft in neutral should the drive shaft require a lot of torque to turn clockwise?

I think the key is locked on the shaft and impellar but I don't know of any way to test to be sure.

second Backlash's question. If it's pumping, you will get the flow in just a few seconds.

I usually turn the shaft by hand before reinstalling the lower unit to feel for resistance. I'm not sure whether your model uses a key or a pin, but chances are it's in place. I think I would test it before disassembling just to check.

Thanks for the replies.

The lower unit is here at home, the boat is in the sling 2 hours away.

I think clockwise is the direction the motor turns the drive shaft.

How much torque (a rough estimate) is required to turn the shaft with the pump installed?

Re: New Water Pump Installed

I have a J 140 w/ same large gearcase and it's real hard to turn drive shaft holding onto the splines. The reason is simple, the pump is dry and the force of a new impeller on the liner is high!

Re: New Water Pump Installed

Thanks Jim.

Makes sense to me. This is my first attempt at water pump replacement so no hands on experience.

Here is a probably a dumb question. When the pump was removed I noticed the water intake from the screen was on the oposite side of the bearing housing from the pump inlet slot. Would this cause the water to flow across the upper bearing housing before it enters the pump? If so it seems like it would cause wear on the housing and seal failures to occur sooner rather then later.

RHB
