I have a 1985 90 HP Evinrude and I am unable to find a kill switch that will fit into the control box in the slot provided. There are pleanty of the round ones around that look like an ignition switch but I need the one that is 1" long by 1/4" wide by 1 " tall and slides in between the ignition switch and the friction knob on the control box. This engine is mounted on a 16' Sportcraft Center Console and the safety lanyard is a good thing to have at 36 MPH. Thanks

Re: Emergency kill switch

Do you have a top mount control box or a side mount? OMC box or.....? If you have the side mount OMC type, in 1985 the switch was moumted on the side not the end.

Give us more info!

Re: Emergency kill switch

Dhadley you are correct the switch is mounted on the side of the side mounted control box. When you open the box it has to fit between the ignition switch and the friction screw. Also I have posted about a fuse problem engine fuse is blowing after I was in the control box, possibly the temp/oil horn shorting?

Re: Emergency kill switch

Did you try getting one from a dealer? Its 585134. It should be easy to get.

Did the fuse start blowing after the box was apart or just all of a sudden?

Good luck!

Re: Emergency kill switch

DHadley the dealer couldn't find the right switch only round ones. Thanks for the PN I'll try giving them the number.
The fuse thing started after I opened the control box? I had to disable the kill switch because it wouldn't let the engine start. But it ran after I disabled the switch in the yard with muffs. Now it won't even let me turn the key on without blowing the fuse.

That doesnt sound too bad. Just retrace your steps and I'm sure you will find it.

By the way, it's good to see you are replacing the switch (safty) even though it's giving you a fit!

Good job!

Re: Emergency kill switch

Dhadley, Thanks for the help I think Norfolk Marine needs your help to find parts as your part number was right on. As it turns out the short was unrelated to the problem with the kill switch just happened around the same time. The ground was in the Tachometer light socket, it took me 5 hours to find it thanks to the wire splitting about 20 time going to different components. Thanks again!
