I have an Evinrude Starflite 90-S

Model Number: 90593C

The starter turns but does not pop up to turn the fly wheel.

If anyone has any suggestions on why this is happening I would greatly apprieciate it.

Thanks,

Low battery voltage, bad (dirty, loose, etc.) connections. After charging the battery, check w/ a hydrometer and a load tester to make sure it's good. Check ground and (+) connections, make sure battery is fully charged and spray some WD40 on the drive part of the starter motor. It's possible the starter motor or the Bendix drive may need rework, but try the simple and cheap stuff first. Most often, this is caused by an old (bad) battery or poor terminations.

Re: Evinrude Starter doesn't pop up

I sprayed the gear down with some WD-40 and it popped right up and engaged.

The only thing is it doesn't seem to have enough power to turn the fly wheel. It goes up then stops. I stop the starter then I have to turn the flywheel by hand for the gear to go back down on the starter.

Thanks,

Thanks WildeOne. I tried a different battery, but it still doesn't move. How freely should the flywheel turn? I have to put a little pressure on it make it turn. Should a lubricate certain parts of the engine to make the flywheel turn easier?

Thanks again,

I'm not sure, but I would assume so. The person I bought it from said he bought it from a friend.

The friend said it ran great, but the person I bought it from never started it.

Thanks,

I can't figure out how to put the engine in neutral. The housing says line up the throttle arm and distributor with the arrow on the housing. I did that but the prop still turns when you turn the flywheel by hand.

Thanks,

You need to get a manual for your motor or hit the library.

Seems like someone always says that. I was just asking for some hints.

Thanks,

I found an old catalog on the web for the outboard.

It says it is push button(electric) shifting.

If the motor hasn't run in a long time, remove the spark plugs and shoot some WD40 in each hole. Put the plugs back and try to start again.

Re: Evinrude Starter doesn't pop up

WildeOne, I did what you said, but the flywheel still only turns if I put a little muscle into turning it manually. The starter engages but turns it a little and then stops. The battery is good. I even put a battery charger set to "start" and it still doesn't turn the flywheel.

How loose does the flywheel have to be? Should it just turn freely with very little force?

I put 12V's to the neutral wire, it doesn't shift. When I put 12V's to the reverse wire it shifts to reverse.

Re: Evinrude Starter doesn't pop up

Hello.
The safe way to get your starter going again is by opening it up. Clean the the brushes and the armature and put a tiny bit of grease on the top and bottom bearring and put it back together again. Then take the spark plugs out and spray some 2 cycle oil into the plug holes. Now without the spark plugs let the starter run for a bit. This will loosen everything up a bit.
If you do not want to take the starter apart at least follow the rest of my advice.By having to much resistance on the starter you can easily burn the armature Maybe things just need to loosen up a bit after sitting idle for so long.
The problem may also be in your lower unit.Check the oil there and get it in neutral somehow.Just play with the wires until it pops out of gear.
Good luck.

Re: Evinrude Starter doesn't pop up

I had the same problem with my starter, 1st checked the battery, it was good, had the starter checked and it happened because the brushes were burnt off, had it rebuilt, started great for 1 season, same this happened, bought a new starter, try getting it rebuilt.
