I have Finally got the engine running but when I turn it over I must start with the throttle at the 1/2 way mark I can back it off twords the slow mark but when I get to about 1/4 throttle engine dies. I think I need to adjust the throttle but dont have a clue on where to start.

Also should the clear fuel filter bowl be full of gas at all times it is when I pump it up but it goes down to less than half full after it has ran for awhile. I replaced the fuel lines with slightly smaller hoses (1/4 rather than 5/8) could this cause a problem ?

If all this makes sense please lend a hand.

Thanks

I don't know if you're running out of fuel or not but when you reduced the fuel line from 5/8" to 1/4" you reduced the cross sectional area to about 1/6th of what is was at 5/8" (.049 sq. in. vs .307 sq. in.).

c/6

Hooty

Hello Flyfisher,
Try adjusting the low speed jet, that's the one at the top of the carb. If the jet screw is rather blunt pointed (approx. 45 deg.) turn it out from lightly seated 1/2 to 3/4 turns. If it's sharp pointed try 1 to 1 to 1&1/2 turns out from lightly seated. This should get you started, then put it in gear and adjust it for best idle characteristics. No one else has responded, so I hope this helps. Good luck

Re: 59 Johnson 35hp throttle and fuel line questions

Thanks guys,

Some follow up questions.

1. I cleaned and adjusted the points. The plastic cover on one coil IS cracked. should I replace both or just the cracked one.

2. What the heck is the stone filter.

3. On a diffrent post RMOLPS (I belive it was him) suggested to someone else to check out and if needed bypass the "CUT-OUT SWITCH" I think I understand what it does but I would welcome any opinion on this.
