I have a 1974 evinrude 135 I thought the ignition switch was wired improperly, I rewired it like it is supposed to be wired and I don't have any fire. The motor turns over and has good compression, but I have no fire at the spark plugs. I can't believe all 4 coils are bad. I have power to the starter selonoid, past the selonoid to the starter. could the 4 power pack be bad? I have no hot terminals on the power pack. The buss bar on top has only one hot terminal, the one from the battery, nothing else. Is this normal? Please any help would be appreciated. Gary

Howdy, Gwetzell.

Did the engine run before you rewired the switch? What is the history of this engine?

Let us know. :)

Re: Boat wont start

I just bought the boat and motor, when I looked at it , the motor would turn over but not start. I was told it ran in June but he put a new ignition switch after the last time he ran it. I noticed that not all wires were hooked up so I hooked them all up on the ignition switch. I just don't know what the deal is. I hope it is nothing serious, but I guess I wil try and see what I can do before I take it to the shop. Gary

Sounds like the kill circuit is hooked up wrong. Is there a button on the left side of the control unit? If so hold it in while trying to start it.

Re: Boat wont start

I was wondering about the kill switch. There is not one on the controls, it is a 1974 control unit. On the back of the unit, facing the back of the boat there is a hole where it looks like something was mounted at on time. Look inside the hole that is still there is like 3 wires. Is this where a push button switch to start the motor. I think it had a switch you pushed to start, is this right.
Gary
