Tilt and Trim will not go out (up)

I have a 1985 Johnson 115 Outboad motor on a Procraft Bass Boat, neither the tilt or trim would go up (out). I loosend the manual release valve and I could pick the motor up off
the transom-saver and push the tilt piston in. Note: If I tighten the manual
release valve while motor is down, I cannot begin to budge the engine up,
although if I hold the engine up by hand and tighten the manual release
valve, it will not hold the engine up.

After studying the hydraulic diagram that came with manual I purchased
awhile back, I took the Tilt and Trim unit out and found that the tilt
cylider will retract under power, but will not advance. I pulled the motor
out, it runs in both directions. I replaced the tilt/trim relief valve, to no avail. I am at the point, that at looking at the hydraulic diagram, there
could be a number of thing that cause this problem. What I need is some
sound advice as to how to narrow the possibilties. I would appreciate any
suggestions at this time.

I had the same problem with my "87" 70 horse Evinrude. After some testing it turned out to be the Trim and Tilt switch in the handle.

To test this and the solenoid you will need to have a multi tester and a diagram of the wiring circuits for the trim and tilt.

Does the trim and tilt motor run at all when you try to lift it? I am guessing it doesn't, but will run when you lower it.

Scott

Hello Degates,
Do you see all of those big screws on the back of the hydrolic unit? those are hyd. valves, there is also one on the port side in front. These valves can be pulled and taken to a dealer that has the proper test equipment. They can be pressure tested to see if they are leaking. One of those is probly leaking by, that is if your pump and motor is working as all the rest is just passage ways.

svangui1, thanks for the feedback. I believe that the switch is ok since I have taken the T&T motor off and if runs in both directions in response to the switch.

Hello "almost retired again",
Thanks for the info.
In regards to the big screws, have you found an easy way to remove these, or do you just need a very very large screw driver? I've tried my largest screw driver on one it started to booger the slot.
Do you know which valve is which under these screws? I have the hydraulic diagram for the T&T unit and trying to narrow the problem down by a process of elimination.
As you say "all the rest are just passage ways" could not one of these be allowing fluid to bypass the cylinders and return to the resovoir?
