My father in law just gave me a 15' starcraft boat in need of some work(floor board, gunnel walls, motor, seats, small holes) But for free can't beat it. My problem is Since I have ripped up the fiberglass and the rotten flooring, I want to start on the motor untill I get money for the floor. I have an evinrude 60hp don't know what year or serial number don't know where to find them, It won't start turns over but won't kick in.
He told me to put tail shaft in a trash can full of water is this correct? What could be possibilities for no start? I used to be a automechanic but now am a computer operator. Any one know of a good repair book covering this motor? like a chilton's or something? This is my first big boat I've Owned....Help a friend rebuild his and now I am doing mine. ANY help finding out the year by the id tag or serial number and thier locations would be greatly appreciated.

Bye :(

Hi Captin G,
Look for the model and serial number on the side of the mounting brackets. Also it may be on an aluminum plug about the size of a quarter on top of the powerhead toward the rear.
You can get a flushing adapter from Wal-Mart,or a marina and run the engine on a garden hose.
Check compression and spark on all cyls. If those are good try squirting a little fuel/oil mixture into the carbs. then see if it will run.
Let us know how it comes out.

I found my id tag right where u said it would be..It is a j02,something,633 I would assum then that it's a 1963 60 hp 3 cyl. It has three spark plugs. I am new to this whole boat motor thing..but I figure since I figure out how to work on cars and computers I can do this too.

Am I correct in my assumption of the year and cyl?
