i have a 1968 johnson 85hrs. motor and it will not go into forward gear, but it will go into reverse and nuetral fine can any one help me with this problem? thank you
Hi Whistlin 28,
Is your engine an electric shift, or a manual shift? If it's a manual shift try disconnecting the shift cable, and shifting it by hand. If this works the shift cable is either broke or mis-adjusted.
Hope this helps
Hi whistlin!

I have a '71 Johnson 50 with the hydro-electric shift and the servo(?) switch inside the throttle arm went bad. I replaced it with a simple 3-way switch mounted just in front of the throttle. If you have this tranny, give it a try, or just have the servo (?) replaced in the throttle ($$)

Hope this helps a little, if not, just ignore me.
ok guys thank yall for the information.I am a first time boater and i am not real sure if it is electric or manual but i think it is manual,,,,,lol sorry but not to good with boats.
WNW; I know people must get tired of hearing this all the time. But the first thing anyone should do after buying a motor is GET A MANUAL. This goes for the experienced as well as the newby. It will show you the diagrams for every aspect of your motor. Gives all the torque settings throughout your motor, which plugs to use, almost anything you need to know about it. Happy Boating, Hal
