Oil in gas crisis?...

I have a 1988 or 1989 85Hp Evinrude outboard 2-cycle engine on our boat. My brother borrowed it and decided to fill it up with gas before he used it. He forgot to add oil to the gas and he ran it for a max of 45 minutes not all at one time though. Would that cause significant damage or cause a problem that should be looked at now before it gets worse? Is there some preventative maintanence that I should do now? Insight would be nice. Thanks.

It's a 6 gallon gas tank and 4 gallons of gas was added. And there was about 1.5 gallons in it allready which had the proper mix of oil/gas.

I would say a compression check is in order. 5 psi difference in any cyl. could indicate damage. If compression test is ok, I would run double oil in the next tank. Compression check again. If everything checks out you should be ok.

Well your motor was running at 183:1 ratio

Check for any discoloration on the head and block as an indicator or running hot.

I agree double the oil and give it a try and give your brother a 2 stroke class (a short left followed by an uppercut :p ). If you ever lend out the boat again tag your gas tank with filling instructions.

Bob

Fill one of the cylanders (the one with valves closed) with two cycle oil let it sit for a day, if any gets down and coming out of the exhust you got trouble, then rotate the fly weel so the other piston is at the top of its sylander (oil from the 1st cylander will come porring out of the exhust now) fill that cylander up with oil nd wait a day.. Good luck tell me ehat you find :)

Re: Oil in gas crisis?...

Thanks guys. The boat is stored 2 hours away from my house, so I will be heading up there in a week or two to check it out. PLEASE, anyone else feel free to add anything you think might have been affected and/or that I need to check or do. Thanx. Jon
Yeah, the tank WILL have filling instructions placed on it from now on!

Moral of this story: don't loan your boat to anybody.

Re: Oil in gas crisis?...

If he didn't run it hard and bog it down at 183:1 ratio it probably didn't do great harm. A national warranty manager for OMC International once told me their outboards actually needed only about 150:1 at full throttle for lube and 300:1 at idle. They added a huge safety factor for corrosion protection while the engines are parked and for operator error. This guy was the warranty mgr for South America, Bahamas and Bermuda.

Also, in the mid 80s OMC outboards specified 100:1 lube. The engines were not modified for this ratio. OMC did away with 100:1 quickly (2 yrs?) because of corrosion issues, not wear problems.

Maybe some of the OMC techs have more details.

Yeah sure BassMan283. Waste your morals somewhere else! The only MORAL of this story, stupid, is to include instructions and remind them what to do. Man, family means more then that!

Anychance your late 80's rude has VRO? Maybe nothing went wrong and it actually worked for a change. Maybe you are just lucky!
I'm with Bassman.........dont loan your boat to anyone......at least not without expecting something to fix when you get it back. Same goes for my harley.....and my wife. Ok, well maybe i would loan out the wife or at leat swap her.

Jamar your just as ignorant as Bassman. Enough said, I didn't put this up for stupid comments, or your opinions. I wanted some advice not something from a tennage gossip column. I think you oughta keep your wife and invest in a Bible.

ONLY people with actual advice about the condition of the Evinrude reply to this post please!

Re: Oil in gas crisis?...

Volman,Here's a little possible good news to consider depending on how often you have actually emptied your fuel tank completely. Most people and hopefully you generally add 1 pint per six gallons of gas to attain 50:1 mix .1 pint per six gallons is actually 48:1 mix .Do the math.Actually you are exactly 1/4 gallon short of achieving 50:1 mix.Assuming tank has been partially refilled on subsequent boating trips using the same 1 pint to six gallons each time it has been done your mix is left short of gas to attain exactly 50:1 mix.Subsequently more people that follow this procedure after a number of boating trips are running oil richer than 50:1 or even 48:1 as the mix was put on top of an already too oil rich mixture.Point being is that maybe for lucks sake that being short oil on that one outing wasn't quite as short as feared. And may very well be why the motor is not showing overt signs of lubrication failure. In any case I wish you luck in your final prognosis.
