 Recently changed the impeler, I have water coming out of my tell tale hole, but it is very hot, my shaft is very hot, I can only put my hand on it for about 4 seconds when it been running wide open for any time. Whats going on?

I have a few questions also, other than the impeler do I have a water pump in this motor? Did I miss something when I put the impeler in (water does come the pee hole) The motor has been running great but I'm sure that it shouldn't be running this hot. Thanks in advance.

Where you put the impeller is the water pump. Check and make sure you installed it correctly. You also need to check the thermostat.

Hello Mangler,
The impeller that you changed is the hart of the water pump. If you have water comming out of the indicator (pee stream), then the next thing that needs checking is the thermostats. They could be stuck closed. I don't think that the engine should be running as hot as you say.
Good Luck

My 1983 Johnson doesnt have a thermostat. My guess is your rubber grommet that seals the upper water pump tube at the power head is swollen and is restricting water flow. You will have to remove the power head to get to it.

Yea like superman said check and make sure you put it in the right way. If it is backwards, it won't pump enough water to cool right and it won't last long.

I'm going to suggest a different route. I have a 74 9.9 and I had a simular problem. It ended up being crud in the water passages in both the head and the exhaust cover. Easy to clean out - get new gaskets though.

Mangler I guess I am not sure what you mean when you say the "SHAFT is very HOT". If you mean Head or Block I would say that is normal. Please explain what you mean by shaft. I see that everyone else understands so please tell me where th shaft is.

What I mean by Shaft is the portion that connects the bottom of the motor to the top of the motor, a bit of steam seemed to come out of the tiny exhaust also.

Thanks for all help to all that have replyied I will keep you posted as to what steps I take.
