I have a 70s 135hp evinrude that has a serious power loss. Turning about 3500 rpm, so I can just about get on plain. Every now and then it tries to pick up and go, but will die back down (cuts in and out). I had the pleasure of hitting the spark plug wire when it was running and got a good zap!!!(is this normal for a boat, I know it’s not for a car) So I shut the motor down and pulled the wire off, and it ran no different, then I did the same with the rest of the wires. Could all the wires be degraded and loosing voltage (they look old) and can you replace just the wires on these coils. I plan to change the plugs this weekend but they are only a few months old with little use. I don’t think it’s a fuel problem because I rebuilt the carbs a few weeks ago and it was fine.

Re: serious power loss

Have you checked all your fuel lines to make sure there's not one kinked or your getting a good fuel flow?

Howdy, BGagnon.

What happened when you pulled the other wires?

Generally if you pull a plug wire and get no drop in rpm, that cylinder is not making power.

When only one cylinder is dead on a V4, it is not likely to be a carb or powerpack problem, as they all feed more than one cylinder.

Good chance that you have a plug wire or coil problem. Try switching, first wires, then coils, to see if the problem follows a part.

Good luck. :)
